My ANZAC story

My Great Great Grandfather was a New Zealand soldier fighting in Europe. At some stage during the war he was exposed to gas. This was used to kill soldiers, along with the bullets and bombs. He survived the gassing but his eyes were injured. This caused him to be temporarily blinded. He was therefore sent to England to recover.
When Walter was at the hospital recovering, my Great Great Grandmother regularly visited his hospital to read to the patients. One of the soldiers that she read to was my Great Great Grandfather. They ended up getting married and a couple of years after the war they travelled back to New Zealand to live.
